The song was made famous by Billie Holiday, who first sang it at New York's first integrated nightclub. It looks at the history of lynching, the courage of those who fought for racial justice, and the interplay of race, labor and the left and popular culture as forces which would give rise to the Civil Rights Movement. This documentary explores also the alliance between American Jews and African Americans in the struggle for civil rights. Includes footage of Billie Holiday performing the song.
