Trama: L'azione si svolge a Delft, in Olanda, nel 1665 A causa delle ristrettezze economiche della sua famiglia, la giovane Griet lascia la sua casa per entrare a servizio in quella del grande pittore Johannes (Jan) Reyniersz Vermeer (1632 - 1675): Griet è protestante, i suoi nuovi padroni cattolici. Nel frattempo, dopo aver subito un tentativo di stupro da parte di van Ruijven, la ragazza si concede a Pieter, il figlio del macellaio.
