Stand-tending and rehabilitation treatment options for 36-year-old, height-repressed lodgepole pine by T. A Newsome( Book )
4 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 36 libraries worldwide
Forest fires facilitate natural regeneration in lodgepole pine, but the pine stands that regenerate after wildfires are often very dense, which usually limits height growth. Such stands are said to be height repressed. One option for treating such stands to reduce or reverse height repression is to use silviculture treatments. This report presents preliminary (third-year) findings of a trial that is testing stand-tending & rehabilitation treatments in a 36-year-old, height-repressed lodgepole pine stand in southern interior British Columbia. The objective of the trial is to determine what regime might provide the most cost-effective means of increasing timber productivity. Treatments tested include fertilization, thinning, thinning followed by fertilization, and replacement of the existing stand

Effects of thinning and fertilizing on the growth of 36-year-old height-repressed lodgepole pine ( Book )
2 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 5 libraries worldwide
In Cariboo Forest Region, fires have created many young, very dense lodgepole pine stands that are not expected to produce merchantable timber if left untreated. In 1997, an operational trial at the Rosita Fire was established to answer the fundamental question of how dense wildfire-origin lodgepole pine should be managed. This Extension Note provides early stand-tending results of that work. The main stand-tending objective of the trial was to determine if thinning and fertilization, alone and in combination, can increase the growth of height-repressed pine. A secondary objective was to provide a demonstration site of treatments tested
Suitability of native hardwoods for reforestation in the Cariboo Forest Region by Jane Perry( Book )
1 edition published in 2000 in English and held by 4 libraries worldwide
Forest management in the Cariboo Forest Region, and in British Columbia in general, has traditionally focused on conifer management and harvesting. However, growing concerns for biodiversity and habitat, along with increasing interest in the potential of hardwoods to supplement the timber supply, have heightened recognition of the role of hardwoods in forest resource management. The most prevalent hardwood species in the Cariboo, in descending order, are trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides), paper birch (Betula papyrifera) and black cottonwood (Populus balsamifera spp trichocarpa). The trial described here was established to compare survival and growth of native hardwood and conifer species on a range of sites in the Cariboo Forest Region. Also being examined is the susceptibility of hardwoods to insects, diseases, frost, decay, and damage from large and small mammals, as well as the feasibility of establishing hardwood stands
