Ihre Söhne, der 16-jährige Walt und der 12-jährige Frank, bemerken von den wachsenden Spannungen nichts - und fallen aus allen Wolken, als ihnen ihre Eltern ihre Trennung bekannt geben und Bernard auszieht. Während er seine attraktive Studentin Lili als Untermieterin aufnimmt und Joan eine Affäre mit dem Tennislehrer Ivan beginnt, müssen die Jungen auf sich allein gestellt mit der neuen Situation fertig werden. Eine schmekrzhafte, aber auch lehrreiche Angelegenheit für alle Betreiligten - mit Ausnahme des Patriarchen, der absolut unverbesserlich ist. Oder etwa doch nicht?
