Scum by Alan Clarke( visu )

Scum is an English prison film, but the prison in question is a Borstal--a juvenile detention center. Two boys with differing approaches attempt to survive: Carlin fights his way to the top of the pecking order, while non-violent Archer is a vegetarian contrarian, strictly within regulations. Unfortunately, others are not so savvy and fall afoul of the system, leading to beatings, rape, suicide, and a vicious revolt. This authoritarian system is completely uninterested in reforming any of the young charges, remanding them to a nightmare world where everything civil has been lost. Originally a made-for-TV movie by the BBC in 1977, it was deemed too controversial and banned from broadcast. Director Alan Clarke gathered the actors, and re-shot the film for theatrical release

The series throws Chief Inspector Gently into a maelstrom of murders and mayhem, whilst lovingly recreating the swinging sixties as it finally hits the North-East, in perfect and nostalgic detail. Chief Inspector George Gently is the classic unsung hero of detective fiction and in Martin Shaw's expert hands he becomes a passionate, growling, ex-army boxer. With his sidekick, the ambitious and undisciplined Detective Sergeant John Bacchus, they make the perfect police partnership, full of warmth and humour. But even the closest partners can come to blows when Gently and Bacchus enter the boxing ring, to raise monies for the police widow's fund - but who will be knocked out for the count of ten?"--Container

Upon arrival he finds a brutal authoritarian system completely uninterested in reforming any of the young charges; equally treacherous is the inmate hierarchy which he must learn to navigate. Soon bearing his battle scars on his face, Carlin quickly ascends to the role of 'Daddy' or top dog, but not at a small price.
