Michelangelo's theory of art by Robert J Clements( Book )
50 editions published between 1961 and 1964 in English and Italian and held by 1,325 libraries worldwide
Few mortals have made a discipline of art and of life or devoted themselves to learning with the singleness of purpose of Michelangelo. Even in the magnificent turmoil of the Italian Renaissance, when Boticelli and Leonardo and Cellini electrified the civilized world with their creative genius, one man towers over them all -- Michelangelo, the master artist. Out of Michelangelo's reading, associations, and the everyday ordeal of art there emerged a complete theory of art, at once personal and representative of his times. This volume traces the development of that theory by drawing upon his letters, poetry, conversations, Renaissance biographies, and his works of art themselves. Professor Clements offers a unified view of the artist's thoughts, opinions, and seeming contradictions on all the arts he practiced so vigorously and brilliantly. Michelangelo's artistic biases, his personality, and his temperament are brought into sharp focus. The result is a complete and revealing image of a man hailed by his age as "divine." - Jacket flap

Comparative literature as academic discipline : a statement of principles, praxis, standards by Robert J Clements( Book )
14 editions published in 1978 in English and held by 527 libraries worldwide
This book is intended to be a sustained exposition of the principles, practices and standards of comparative literature. After a discussion of the origins, definitions and dimensions of the discipline, three chapters address questions of establishing and maintaining a department: staffing, budgeting, selecting students, setting up a curriculum, and instituting the foreign language requirement. Chapters 6 through 10 deal with the major comparative approaches--genres and forms, periods and movements, themes and myths, interrelations of literature, and literary history and criticism--and discuss courses appropriate to each. The next two chapters discuss teaching methods, textbooks, examinations and the thesis on the doctoral, graduate and undergraduate levels. Chapter 13 treats the issue of the evaluation of comparative literature departments. The concluding chapters discuss academic diplomacy and politics and the future of the discipline. An appendix on the organizational structure of the discipline and a bibliography complete the volume. (Author/AMH)
