Unable to continue her job at her mother's hat shop, she goes to the ambulatory castle of the notorious wizard Howl and insinuates herself into his household. Sophie befriends Calcifer, the fire demon who powers the castle and who is bound to Howl by a contract, the terms of which Calcifer cannot reveal. They promise to help each other with the their problems. Like Calcifer, Howl can also see through the Witch's spell, and he and Sophie fall in love. Sophie helps Howl confront his former teacher, and the Witch of the Waste

Trama: Chihiro, dieci anni, non salta di gioia all'idea di trasferirsi in un nuovo quartiere. Ô in macchina, insieme alla famiglia, e sta viaggiando alla volta della nuova casa. Quando suo padre si accorge di essersi perso e, per giungere in tempo per il trasloco, prende una scorciatoia, finisce in una strada senza uscita Chihiro vorrebbe convincere i genitori a non scendere dalla macchina per andare a vedere cosa c'è in fondo ad uno strano e buio tunnel, ma, per non restare sola, è costretta a seguire mamma e papà. Ritrovatasi improvvisamente in un paesaggio incantato e, poi, all'interno di un parco giochi bello e stranamente deserto, Chihiro vaga per le sue strade inquietanti, mentre i genitori si abbuffano ad una tavola imbandita di ogni golosità. Quando ritorna dalla perlustrazione scopre, però, che sia la madre sia il padre si sono trasformati in maiali. Non sa che fare per liberarli da un probabile incantesimo. Così, discesa la sera e popolatasi la città di spiriti, divinità e altri strani esseri, decide di intrufolarsi nelle grandi terme dove si dirigono tutte queste strambe presenze. Qui, in mezzo a creature bizzarre, impara ad ambientarsi in breve tempo: segue gli utili consigli di Haku, un ragazzo che ha dimenticato il proprio nome e che studia per diventare mago, convince la strega Yubaba ad assumerla nel complesso termale come pulitrice; affronta con coraggio e umiltà tutte le situazioni più improbabili e inaspettate. Riesce, così, a conquistare l'affetto e la fiducia di molti frequentatori e lavoranti della città incantata. Ma non basta, serve uno sforzo in più per salvare i genitori. Occorre recuperare la propria identità (in città tutti la chiamano Sen), quella di Haku (costretto a seguire i voleri della strega), quella della stessa Yubaba, per tornare alla vita di tutti i giorni
