Poulet aux prunes = Chicken with plums by Marjane Satrapi( visu )
26 editions published between 2011 and 2014 in 4 languages and held by 646 libraries worldwide
For their lovely, yet tragic film, graphic artists Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud reunite for a second story drawn from Satrapi's family's rich history. Instead of an animated feature, like Persepolis, they turn to live action. In pre-revolutionary Tehran, Nasser-Ali Khan (Mathieu Amalric) comes across as a curmudgeon who cares more about his career than his family, but there's more to the musician than meets the eye. With his son's help, he sets out to replace his broken violin, leading to adventures with a mysterious woman (Golshifteh Farahani) and a magical merchant (Jamel Debbouze, delightful), but when no suitable replacement materializes, Nasser announces his plan to pack it in. As he lies in bed, waiting to die, he reflects on incidents involving a judgmental clockmaker (Serge Avedikian) and his headstrong mother (Isabella Rossellini). Then, he meets the Angel of Death (narrator Edouard Baer), who gives him a glance at the fates that await his loved ones, much as in A Christmas Carol (Chiara Mastroianni plays his adult daughter). Meanwhile, his wife (Maria de Medeiros) plies him with delicacies, like chicken with plums, but he insists that death is the only solution, which makes this sound like a grim affair, except Satrapi and Paronnaud find the humor in the scenario and the beauty in the milieu, combining stylized sets and hand-drawn backdrops. Much as with Sean Penn's guitarist in Woody Allen's Sweet and Lowdown, Amalric never strives to make Nasser-Ali likable, but he succeeds in making this stubborn man understandable. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

In 1970s Iran, Marjane "Marji" Statrapi watches events through her young eyes and her idealistic family. Their long dream is realized when the hated Shah is defeated in the Iranian Revolution of 1979. Now ruled by Islamic fundamentalists, Marji grows up to witness first hand how the new Iran has become a repressive tyranny on its own. With Marji dangerously refusing to remain silent at this injustice, her parents send her abroad to Vienna to study. This change proves an equally difficult trial for Marji as she finds herself in a different culture loaded with abrasive characters and profound disappointments that deeply trouble her. 3 editions published in 2011 in 3 languages and held by 3 libraries worldwide
We are in Tehran in 1958, and Nasser Ali Khan, one of Iran's most revered tar players, discovers that his beloved instrument is irreparably damaged. Though he tries, he cannot find one to replace it, one whose sound speaks to him with the same power and passion with which his music speaks to others. In despair, he takes to his bed, renouncing the world and all its pleasures, closing the door on the demands and love of his wife and his four children. Over the course of the week that follows, his family and close friends attempt to change his mind, but Nasser Ali slips further and further into his own reveries: flashbacks and flash-forwards (with unexpected appearances by the likes of the Angel of Death and Sophia Loren) from his own childhood through his children's futures. And as the pieces of his story slowly fall into place, we begin to understand the profundity of his decision to give up life
