French drama set in the Malian city of Timbuktu during the jihadist takeover of the country in 2012. The feature chronicles the impact of citizens living in and around the city after Islamic militants arrive to implement their extreme doctrine, which begins with the destruction of many of the inhabitants' cultural heritage sites. Amongst those that clash with the new regime are four people who are arrested for making music and have their female singer Fatou (Fatoumata Diawara) subjected to 40 lashes. The local imam (Adel Mahmoud Cherif) pleads with the intruders to abandon their crusade and spare his people but has his protestations ignored. Meanwhile, just outside the city in dunes previously free of jihadists, a cattle herder (Ibrahim Ahmed) and a fisherman (Abel Jafri) become embroiled in a struggle that brings jihadist judgement upon them

The wave is made up of millions of migrant factory workers. The homes they seek are the rural villages and families they left behind to seek work in the booming coastal cities. It is an epic spectacle that tells us much about China, a country discarding traditional ways as it hurtles towards modernity and global economic dominance

Ballerina documents the lives of five ballerinas from the world renowned Kirov dance company. The film captures the magical masochism of the Russian prima ballerina with five women who eat, drink, bleed, and sweat ballet. They are Russia's pride and joy--the best at what they do. Each one has become ethereal and a star in her own right, fighting and clawing her way to glory in the Kirov company. The discipline is severe, the path strewn with sights amazing and disturbing, and the dancing truly divine and exquisitely beautiful. In comparison with the reality of what it takes to be a Russian prima ballerina, even as seen in this addmittedly small slice, The Red Shoes is an outrageous fairy tale

Greenpeace, the story ( visu )
2 editions published between 2012 and 2014 in English and held by 61 libraries worldwide
The creation of Greenpeace is probably the most exciting and heroic environmental adventure of the 20th century. Although powerful now, at the start it was just a small group of hippies, motivated by their vision of a green and peaceful world. Through unpublished archive footage and interviews with Greenpeace's founders, this extraordinary documentary takes an in-depth and first hand look into the organization that has become synonymous with the ecological movement. Greenpeace's success sprung from their ability to attract the attention of the media through direct action and shocking images. Their willingness to put themselves in harms way brought admiration as well as controversy and ultimately death. It is a story of setbacks, victories and grappling to remain relevant. With the challenges that face the world today, environmental or otherwise, we can take heart from the fact that a handful of twenty somethings can change the world
