Nassau is the capital of the island of New Providence which is one of the many islands of the Bahaman archipelago that extends for almost a thousand kilometres between Cuba and Florida in the Atlantic Ocean. New Providence is the commercial and political centre and is more commonly known as the Bahamas. Nassau is a city without skyscrapers. In 1492 Christopher Columbus lay anchor on the Bahaman island of San Salvador and in front of Government House a statue duly commemorates the famous adventurer. The next to arrive were pirates, smugglers, settlers and tradesmen. Every kind of fortune hunter was keen to exploit the islands of the Caribbean
