Trama: Anni 30. Frank è uno dei tanti figli della famiglia McCourt, poverissima, irlandese e cattolica, una delle poche ad essersi trasferita dall'America a Limerick, la città più piovosa d'Irlanda, per la troppa povertà, quando la maggior parte degli irlandesi seguiva il percorso opposto nella speranza di un po' di ricchezza. Frankie assiste impotente e quasi rassegnato alla propria sorte: egli vede morire sotto i suoi occhi tre fratelli per denutrizione, vive in case puzzolenti e fatiscenti, guarda il padre ubriaco e disoccupato sperperare i soldi del sussidio in continue sbronze, accetta con commiserazione l'incapacità della madre di ribellarsi allo stato di povertà in cui versa, vergognandosi però quando va ad elemosinare gli scarti dei preti per far mangiare i figli. Ma la forza vitale del ragazzo è superiore a qualsiasi disgrazia, spinto dalla voglia di ricordarsi solo i momenti più belli dell'infanzia (i racconti del padre, le marachelle con i coetanei), e dalla volontà di ritornare in America per sottrarsi al destino avverso. Un destino che, prima di vederlo salpare per le Americhe, gli fa vivere la fuga da casa del padre, la 'prostituzione' della madre (disposta a giacere con un lontano cugino pur di avere un tetto sopra la testa), la morte per consunzione della ragazza che amava. Solo di fronte alla statua della Libertà, Frank comincia a pensare ad un futuro migliore, dove finalmente "nessuno ha i denti marci e tutti hanno un gabinetto."
