In the 2005 World Series, the Chicago White Sox became the latest long-suffering team to celebrate a championship for the first time since World War I, beating the Houston Astros in a four-game sweep. Houston, which finally won a pennant for the first time since it joined the National League in 1962, became the first team swept in its Series debut. While the Windy City celebrated the White Sox--who hadn't won a Series since 1917 and hadn't played in one since 1959--fans didn't get to enjoy a single celebration in person, as the division title and all three rounds of the postseason were won on the road, a baseball first. No longer will the White Sox be remembered for Shoeless Joe Jackson's Black Sox, who threw the 1919 Series against Cincinnati, but rather as champions -- improbable as that might seem

The Dodgers have managed to win six World Series championships through their 115 years or so of existence. Appearing in seven Series before winning their first in 1955, after moving from Brooklyn to Los Angeles in 1958, they managed to appear in four from 1959 to 1966, and won three, going on to win again in 1981 and 1988. The film spends some time on various memorable individuals in the organization, notably Sandy Koufax and the inimitable Tommy Lasorda, with ample footage of feats that inspire the dreams of little kids growing up. Despite oftentimes being baseball's bridesmaids, "Da Bums" have always been supremely watchable, and Dodger Blue makes waxing nostalgic for Dodger heroics extremely enjoyable

The World Series, played annually since 1903 (in 1904, the New York Giants refused to play the champions of an 'up-start' league; in 1994 the post-season was wiped out by labor conflict) has--despite the development of other sports and the broadening of the entertainment industry--a perennial hold on American popular culture. The defining moment of baseball, the hard-fought post-season games of modern World Series, while not necessarily featuring teams with the best records, have a long history of riveting the attention of the entire United States. No team more so than the New York Yankees, winners of 25 titles in the 20th century, including the unprecedented (and as yet unequaled) string of five victories from 1949-1953. The Yankees are truly baseball's Team of the Century

"What a change of scenery!" The 1959 World Series featured the NL Los Angeles Dodgers beating the AL Chicago White Sox, four games to two, in the first World Series games ever played on the West Coast. The 1963 Series matched two-time defending champions, the New York Yankees against the Dodgers, with the Dodgers sweeping the Series in four games to capture their second title in five years. In 1965, the Dodgers took on the Minnesota Twins, who had won their first pennant since 1933. It became the third Dodger title since their move to Los Angeles in 1958. In 1981, the Dodgers were in their third Series in five years. They won in six games for their first title since 1965, and their first victory over the Yankees since 1963. The 1988 Series matched the Dodgers against Oakland A's, with the Dodgers upsetting the heavily favored A's to win in five games, the opposite result of their 1974 meeting. The highlight came when injured Dodgers MVP Kirk Gibson, who could barely walk due to injuries suffered during the NLCS, hit a pinch-hit, walk-off home run off closer Dennis Eckersley in Game 1

Despite a lousy regular season--a mere 83 wins-- the St. Louis Cardinals took the 2006 World Series within five games, proving that baseball is not purely a game of statistics but one of the heart and determination that leads to drama on the field. What matters is not the numbers but relentless, never-say-die hard work. Follow the underdog Cardinals through the team's many post-season dramas during the lead-up to the World Series, to action on the field from each game in the championship competition as the boys of summer become the champions of fall for 2006

Two hour-long films summarizing the highlights of the 1987 and 1991 World Series featuring the Minnesota Twins. The 1987 World Series inaugurated the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in fine style, and their triumph over the St. Louis Cardinals extended through seven games, filled with nail-biting tension. The core of both teams was the same: manager Tom Kelly; hitters Kirby Puckett and Kent Hrbek; and pitchers Frank Viola and Jack Morris, supplemented by the likes of Gary Gaetti, Jeff Reardon, Scott Erickson, and Chuck Knoblauch--and of course the Homer Hanky-wielding fans turning the Metrodome into a house of horrors for opposing teams. Many consider the 1991 series among the greatest ever played, as the Twins faced down the powerhouse Atlanta Braves

The 1945 World Series matched the American League Detroit Tigers against the National League Chicago Cubs. The Series was a rematch between the two opponents of the 1935 World Series. The Tigers won four games to three, giving them their second championship and first since their 1935 win. In 1968, the Tigers won their first championship since 1945, and the third in their history. The Tigers came back from a 3-1 deficit to win three in a row, largely on the arm of MVP Mickey Lolich, who won three complete games in a single World Series, a feat not duplicated since, as of 2006. 1984 factoids: rematch between managers Sparky Anderson (Detroit) and Dick Williams (San Diego); Game 5: last World Series afternoon game played outdoors; three players set World Series hitting records; Tiger Stadium the oldest ballpark to host a World Series; battle between fast-food chain owners Tom Monaghan (Domino's, Tigers) and Ray Kroc (McDonald's, Padres); Tigers lead the league from opening day, post a franchise-record 104 wins, becoming the third team in MLB history to lead the league wire-to-wire--winning by 15 games--then cruising through the postseason. It was one of the most dominant single-season performances of the 1980s
