Helping your child succeed in school : with activities for children aged 5 through 11 by Dorothy Rich( Book )
9 editions published between 1992 and 1996 in English and Undetermined and held by 729 libraries worldwide
Parents can play a key role in attaining the United States' National Education Goals, a main component of which is that all children will be ready to learn when they enter school. This guide for parents provides basic information on factors related to school success and a series of activities that parents can do with their children, ages 5 through 11, to help them succeed in school. Part 1 of the guide serves as an introduction. Part 2, "The Basics," addresses learning at home, in the community, and at school, and emphasizes the importance of starting early, communicating with children, handling children's homework, connecting with the community, and being involved at school. How children learn and what children learn from parents are also addressed. The importance of both active and quiet learning, limiting television viewing, and encouraging active learning are emphasized. The guide then lists important messages for parents to convey to their children about school success: (1) sharing one's own experiences and goals; (2) establishing realistic, consistent family rules; and (3) encouraging children to think about the future. Part 3 of the guide, "Activities," comprises the bulk of the guide, and contains parent-child activities arranged by approximate child age levels. Each activity lists its goal, benefits to children, materials needed, and step-by-step instructions. Part 4 of the guide, "Parents and the Schools," explains when parents should talk with teachers, gives recommendations for parent-teacher conferences, and makes suggestions for volunteering
The condition of education 1993 by Nabeel Alsalam( Book )
1 edition published in 1993 in English and held by 47 libraries worldwide
The current status of education for 1993 is presented in the form of education "indicators"--Key data that measure the health of education, monitor important developments, and show trends in major aspects of education. The 60 indicators have been divided into 6 areas: (1) access, participation, and progress; (2) achievement, attainment, and curriculum; (3) economic and other outcomes of education; (4) size, growth and output of educational institutions; (5) climate, classrooms, and diversity in educational institutions; and (6) human and financial resources of educational institutions. The report includes the text, tables, and charts for each indicator plus the technical supporting data, supplemental information, and data sources. Indicators on issues in elementary and secondary education are integrated with those on issues in postsecondary education to reflect the continuity of educational experiences. New indicators include the following: (1) age of first graders; (2) participation in adult education; (3) educational attainment of Hispanics, by recency of migration; (4) course taking in college for recent graduates and for recently graduated full-time teachers; (5) education and labor-market outcomes of high school diploma and GED graduates; (6) health characteristics of adults, by years of schooling; (7) participation in school decision making; (8) time in the classroom; and (9) international comparisons of reading literacy. 1 edition published in 1992 in English and held by 0 libraries worldwide
Because most parents say they do not or cannot help their children with science, this booklet was designed to help them do so, easily and with pleasure for both parent and child. The introduction presents information on why and how parents should help their children and provides a general orientation to the ideas and activities offered in the booklet, with emphasis on the importance of encouraging and stimulating children's natural curiosity and eagerness to learn. The other chapters are: "The Basics,""Important Things to Learn,""Activities at Home," and "Activities in the Community." Activities that can be performed at home by a child with an adult have names like The Big Picture, Attack of the Straws, Soap Power, Bubbles, Bugs, It Floats, Slime, Celery Stalks at Midnight, Sticky Things, Hair Raising Results, Moldy Oldies, Plants, Crystals, Cake, and Television. Activities that can be enjoyed in the community include visiting zoos, museums, planetariums, aquariums and farms, and meeting and talking to people who use science in a variety of interesting occupations.
