Carlos Estrado, a busboy in a Cuban Hotel with aspirations to become a composer, is rebuffed by Mama Valdez, mother of famed singer and dancer Lolita Valez, when he attempts to get her to use one of his songs. Carlos mistakenly thinks Lolita is the one who rebuffed him. Shortly thereafter, he unexpectedly becomes leader if the hotel band. He and his band set out for Havana by bus to search for a singer and dancer to join them in the grand rhumba contest at the yearly carnival. Lolita, who has her heart set on winning the rhumba prize, slips out of her hotel and heads for Havana, too, in a car owned by Marge Henley, an American agent trying to sign her up. She abandons the car when the police pursue her and, under an assumed name, persuades Carlos to take her to havana with him and his band. Upon learning Lolita's true identity, however, Carlos cools towards her. But on the day of the carnival they clear up their misunderstanding and compete in and win the contest
