Stalin ( visu )
3 editions published between 1992 and 1993 in English and held by 12 libraries worldwide
Summary: A dramatisation, filmed on location in Moscow and Budapest, of Stalin's rise, ruthless consolidation and retention of power as an absolute dictator (the years from his return from exile in 1917 to his death in 1953), this film is dominated by Duvall's portrayal of Stalin as something akin to a gangster overlord who sees any opposition as a threat to his position. Stalin's transformation of Soviet society and the economy and the defence of the Soviet Union in World War II is subservient to the machinations of the despot and his henchmen. This provides the required dramatic unity but at the expense of any historical overview. While the presentation here seems to be in accord with the known facts, the nature of Stalin's private life - his relationships with his wife and children - is necessarily speculative
