Drama set on the eve of the First World War in a small village in Northern Germany. In the process it uncovers the private lives and characters of various inhabitants and families of the village, from the local baron and steward, the strict Lutheran pastor and the doctor, to farm workers, and the undercurrents of fear, repression, resentment, hatred and brutality that simmer under a respectable surface in both old and young. Heart of glass by Werner Herzog( visu )

This visionary film with a resemblance to a folk tale is set around 1800. It begins with a prophet shepherd describing the Apocalypse. In the valley below, the foreman of a glass factory has died and with him the secret of producing an exquisite glass ruby from which the whole community lives. In his search for the formula, the factory owner is overcome with a madness that engulfs the village. This is the most extreme expression of Herzog's disillusioned romanticism. A trance-like atmosphere pervades the film; most of the cast were hypnotised before each day's shooting. The screenplay is based on the second chapter of a novel, The Hour of Death, by Herbert Achternbusch, which is in turn based on a Bavarian folk legend
