Peter Lilienthals Film basiert auf Joel Königs autobiografischen Aufzeichnungen "Den Netzen entkommen" und fragt nach dem Ursprung von Vorurteilen und Hass. Als erster deutscher Film seit 1956 wurde er 1979 mit dem Goldenen Bären ausgezeichnet.
