Forced saving : mandating private retirement incomes by Hazel Bateman( Book )
8 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 267 libraries worldwide
"Population ageing, combined with electoral pressure for smaller government, is inevitably leading to increased action to reform retirement provision policy to place much greater reliance on self-provision for the elderly. This development is bringing into ever sharper focus the need for research directed at exploring the links between private retirement provision and public sector policies and institutions. This book offers an analysis of pension policy from an economic perspective. It begins with an overview of the problem of population ageing around the world, and then provides a framework within which policy responses may be consistently assessed."--Jacket

Private Pensions in OECD Countries : Australia by Hazel Bateman( Article )
1 edition published in 1997 in English and held by 16 libraries worldwide
As most other OECD Member countries had already done, Australia has, since 1991, supplemented an existing flat-rate universal (but means-tested) residence-based old-age pension by a compulsory earnings related second tier for employees known as the "Superannuation Guarantee". However, it was the first Member country in which the favoured format of participation in the second tier is in the form of pure "money purchase" schemes in which benefits are determined solely by the amount which accumulates in individual accounts. Benefits are predominately paid as lump-sums on retirement, although tax arrangements are being changed to encourage beneficiaries to purchase annuities. This report, compiled by two Australian experts, describes this system and its relation to pre-existing tax-advantaged voluntary provision, which only covered one-third of employees but remains predominant in terms of assets accumulated and benefits payable. The report discusses the sources of retirement

Demography and climate change : the growing number of people and its consequences for ecology, social redistribution systems and urban living by Hazel Bateman( Book )
1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 8 libraries worldwide
La 4e de couv. indique : "A growing population is good for social redistribution systems, but bad for the climate. Beyond this simple statement, demography, economic development, resource usage, climate change and political interventions influencing migration, fertility and social redistribution are not so easily brought together in a way to fully acknowledge for their interdependency. This book takes up the associated methodlogical challenges that are mirrored by several paradoxes: On the one hand, the reduciton of western socieitesecological footprint is well supported by declining birth rates. On the other hand, sustainable transport, wast of sewage systems call either for population growth or a stronger urbanization of a declining population to remain affordable. At the same time, theris the argument of population growth being necessary to finance the welfare state, its pension systemss as elderly care. As both "solutions" to demographic decline - increased migration and pro-natalist family policies - are politically heavily disputed, and given the interdependencies of poulation growth, climate change and resource availablity, this collection of articles shows, that an expert discussion on these aspects should indeed include the necessary normative aspects associated with the questions of influencing population size by policies. This book contains the inputs of international high profile researchers, discussing how these issues will shape the socio-economic reality in the middle of the century"
