Le samouraï = The samurai by Jean-Pierre Melville( visu )
24 editions published between 1967 and 2012 in 4 languages and held by 784 libraries worldwide
A hired killer in a state of virtual living death goes about his business in a muted Paris, a city of shadows, only to fatally admit emotion (the love of a woman) into his life. His actions are analogous to hara-kiri committed by the solitary samurai. Melville takes the mythology of the gangster and removes all overt social comment in favour of romantic stylisation. Melville commented that his intention was "to show the mental disorder of a man who unmistakably had a tendency to schizophrenia."
Daughters of darkness by Harry Kümel( visu )
8 editions published between 1971 and 2015 in 3 languages and held by 36 libraries worldwide
In the lost space of an opulent Ostend hotel, eeriely deserted in the off season, a young but hardly innocent couple on their honeymoon encounter the apparently ageless, sunlight-fearing, lesbian Countess Bathory. Kumel imaginatively balances the erotic malaise and violence of vampire folklore and a European (specifically Belgian) surrealist tradition with thirties Hollywood camp and comic strip tableaux (see also Jean Rollin's La Vampire Nu). Perverse sexuality is located in a setting of decadent highlife which seems to immobilise the 'victims'
