Le lecteur à l'epreuve du banal dans les nouvelles de Raymond Carver by Claire Fabre( Book )
3 editions published in 1997 in French and held by 3 libraries worldwide
The short stories by Raymond Carver are concerned with characters and situations which immediately call to mind the notion of "banality" the purpose of this work is to use this notion as an operational tool liable to account for the specificity of Carver's writing. In the first part, the importance of stereotypy is assessed both from the thematic point of view and from the linguistic point of view. The concepts of "voice", "cliché" and "stereotype" are widely used always in relation to precise examples. The study of four manuscripts shows that the author emphasized the "litterality" of cliches along his work. the second part deals with the mimetic dimension of Carver's workand shows, on the one hand, that the traditional mechanisms of representation are subverted and, on the other hand, that a specific "reality" comes to light, one whose uncanniness is due to its very banality. Lastly, the third part examines the way "every day life" is shown to dysfunction in the stories: through the study of Carver's handling of time we show that a number of systems based on accumulation and proliferation lead the text on the verge of the grotesque. The question of how to interpret the stories, whether literally or allegorically is also treated in this last section
