Based on a true story, The Harmonists portrays the rise and fall of a successful vocal group in Germany that was disbanded in 1934 as part of the mounting persecution of Jews. The Comedian Harmonists did comic and romantic songs in intricate harmony, and were extremely popular, but as the Nazis became more powerful, the group were forbidden to sing songs by Jewish composers--and finally, because three of their members were Jewish, they were banned from performing in public.

Based on the Kurt Tucholsky's novel Schloss Gripsholm and on his real life story, this film plunges the audience into the pleasure-craving, decadent world of Berlin cabaret at the beginning of the 1930s. Kurt Tucholsky, who was an important Jewish German intellectual, gives us Kurt (Ulrich Noethen), a German-Jewish publisher, ironic author and, thanks to his risque chanson lyrics, a celebrated star of the cabaret. After writing inflammatory articles about the Nazis, Kurt travels to the Swedish palace of Gripsholm with his girlfriend Lydia and their friends, the seductive vaudeville singer Billie and the passionate fly-boy Karlchen.
