The Mahabharata (which can be translated as 'The Poetical History of Humanity') is an epic tale of two sets of cousins: the Pandavas, the five sons of Pandu, the king of Hastinapura, and the Kauravas, the one hundred sons of Pandu's brother, Dhritarashtra. The eldest brother of each set of cousins claims the throne of Hastinapura for himself and a struggle arises between them. At first the kingdom is divided, but, as a result of a rigged gambling match, the eldest of the Pandavas, Yuddhishtira, loses his half, and he and his brothers are forced into exile for thirteen years, after which time they will be given back their kingdom. However, when the eldest of the Kauravas, Duryodhana, refuses to do so the two sets of cousins gather their armies and go to war.

This stunning version of Hamlet by internationally acclaimed director Peter Brook has stripped the work of what he refers to as 'the inessential' to focus on the myth at the heart of the play. Simply staged and accompanied by a haunting soundscsape ranging from muffled bells to birds in flight, this powerfully original and exciting production lends itself perfectly to the screen.

"Khanon, a poor, young rabbinical student, loves Leah, whose wealthy father has decided to marry her to a more prosperous prospect- conveniently forgetting the promised match he'd made with Khanon's father. Neither Khanon nor Leah know of the broken promise, and shtetl etiquette prevents them from actually courting, but she obviously loves him too ... Rejected, Khanon-feverish with desire and self-deprivation turns to the mysteries of Kabbalah to prevent Leah from marrying anyone else. When that fails, he dies-and becomes a dybbuk, a wandering spirit that enters and possesses Leah's body on her wedding day."--San Francisco Examiner, November 12, 1997.
