In 1830, the sinister Crouteux Inn is set in wild and disturbing mountains ariegeois country. The establishment is run by Pierre and Rose Martin, a couple of innkeepers who regularly murder and rob solitary travellers. One stormy night, a stagecoach in difficulty seekes refuge in the inn. Among the travelers is the good father Camus who has been made responsible of an adolescent who he must bring to a monastery in the mountains. Pierre finds out that a new road will be deterring travellers from his inn. Fearing ruin he decides to kick everyone out. While Rose feels the need to confess to the holy man. To her horror, she tells him about the whopping hundred three crimes. Father Camus, bound by the seal of confession, however, goes to work by all means to save travelers. After a perilous night Father Camus manages to save his skin and those of the other travellers. But he discovers, in the morning that the hand of God is not as soild as he thought
