"Den europäischen Unternehmen gehen infolge mangelnder Fremdsprachenkenntnisse zahlreiche Aufträge verloren. Auf der Grundlage einer Stichprobe wird geschätzt, dass 11 % der exportorientierten europäischen KMU (945 000 Unternehmen) wegen dieser Kommunikationshindernisse möglicherweise Aufträge verloren gehen. Die Untersuchung zeigt, dass ein klarer Zusammenhang besteht zwischen Fremdsprachenkenntnissen und Exporterfolgen. Es wurden vier Faktoren des Sprachmanagements ermittelt, die mit erfolgreicher Exportleistung zusammenhängen: strategisches Herangehen an die mehrsprachige Kommunikation, Einstellung von Muttersprachlern, Einstellung von Mitarbeitern mit Fremdsprachenkenntnissen und Einsatz von Übersetzern und Dolmetschern. Würden alle exportierenden KMU eine oder mehrere dieser Methoden einsetzen, so könnte die gesamte Wirtschaft der EU in erheblichem Maße davon profitieren. Für den Zugang zu den Exportmärkten kommt dem Englischen besondere Bedeutung zu. Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchung deuten allerdings darauf hin, dass die Realität viel komplexer ist, als die oft zitierte Ansicht, dass Englisch die Weltsprache schlechthin ist. In Osteuropa ist Russisch weit verbreitet (neben Deutsch und Polnisch). In weiten Gebieten Afrikas ist Französisch die Handelssprache und Ähnliches gilt für Spanisch in Lateinamerika. Voraussetzung für langfristige Geschäftspartnerschaften ist der Aufbau und die Pflege von Beziehungen. Dafür sind Kenntnisse der Kultur und Sprache des Zielmarktes unentbehrlich." -- Kurzfassung
