The impact of globalization on the world's poor : transmission mechanisms by Machiko Nissanke( Book )
13 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 243 libraries worldwide
Globalization and poverty epitomize two of the most pressing issues in international development today. While the process of globalization possesses an enormous potential capacity to accelerate economic growth and development, the depth of poverty found in many parts of the developing world is still unacceptably high. Pro-globalization proponents see the globalization process is turning into a destructive tsunami that wrecks the already low standard of living of vulnerable households. Despite the worldwide passionate debate about the impact of globalization on the world's poor, there are very few studies which have systematically examined the various transmission mechanisms through which globalization ultimately affects the poor within different specific contents. This volume contains chapters by leading development economists analysing critically and rigorously how different manifestations of globalization tend to influence poverty in the developing world
Financial integration and development : liberalization and reform in Sub-Saharan Africa by Machiko Nissanke( Book )
13 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 227 libraries worldwide
As part of Structural Adjustment Programmes, many governments in Sub-Saharan Africa initiated a major restructuring of the financial system in the 1980's. Emphasis was placed on the need to adopt financial liberalization measures, and to enhance regulatory and supervisory functions. However, financial reform has at best had a limited developmental effect on the region so far, and widespread fragmentation of financial markets persist. Financial Integration and Development examines the effects of financial liberalization on development, with a particular focus on Sub-Saharan Africa. Looking at the relationship between formal and informal financial institutions, it focuses on structural features that separate formal and informal segments of the financial system. The findings are based on field work conducted in Ghana, Malawi, Nigeria and Tanzania, and lead the way to a reassessment of the design of financial reform programmes and some proposals for effective institution-building policies.; These include measures to deepen financial markets, to strengthen the financial infrastructure, to implement a new regulatory and incentive framework to advance market integration, to improve financial technology and to develop linkages amongst market segements. One of the first systematic studies on this important area, this volume contributes to the literature on alternative theories of financial development and on the effects of financial liberalization. It will be of particular interest to students of development economics

Aid as handmaiden for the development of institutions : a new comparative perspective ( Book )
4 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 115 libraries worldwide
Through comparative studies of aid supported infrastructure projects in East Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, the book examines how aid could assist development processes by facilitating development of local endogenous institutions, which are both pro-growth and pro-poor. Applying comparative institutional analyses based on the concept of endogenous institutions and institutional changes, and exploring the model of 'development cooperation', the book examines aid effectiveness in a broader context of institution development in the two regions. It offers a new perspective on the institutions-development nexus, alternative to the conventional one with its emphasis of an inevitable institutional convergence to a monolithic universal model. It argues that socially and politically sustainable development involves institutional innovation by developing endogenous institutions, firmly embedded in a local social-political system. The book offers policy lessons from the East Asian experiences with aid-supported infrastructure projects to governments in sub-Saharan Africa, the international aid community, including emerging development partners

Economic reforms in Ghana : the miracle and the mirage ( Book )
6 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 77 libraries worldwide
Channels and policy debate in the globalization-inequality-poverty nexus by Machiko Nissanke( Book )
8 editions published between 2005 and 2006 in English and held by 27 libraries worldwide
The paper offers a critical literature review of the debate surrounding the globalization-poverty nexus, focusing on channels and linkages through which globalization affects the poor. After introducing four different concepts used to measure trends in world inomce inequality, it examines first the 'growth' conduit through which globalization affects poverty. Treating inequality as the explicit filter between growth and poverty reduction, the causal chain of openness-growth-inequality-poverty is scrutinized, link by link. The paper then moves on the examine other channels in the globalization-poverty nexus that operate through changes in relative factor and good prices, factor movements, the nature of technological change and diffusion, the impact of globalization on volatility and vulnerability, the worldwide flow of information, global disinflation, and institutions, respectively. The paper concludes with a discussion of strategic policy issues within the context of the globalization debate" -- Abstract
