Der britische Bühnen- und TV-Veteran Peter Kosminsky, der hier sein Debüt als Spielfilmregisseur gibt, schafft mit Weißer Oleander ein Schaufenster für die beachtlichen Leistungen seiner Darstellerinnen. Dem Film fehlt vielleicht die emotionale Tiefe des Romans, aber er spricht Bände über die empfindliche Balance zwischen Freiheit und Verantwortung
