Er versucht sich als Detektiv, verliebt sich aber, statt einen Auftrag ernsthaft auszuführen, in die Frau eines Geschäftsmannes, den er eigentlich beobachten sollte. Antoine schwankt zwischen seiner Freudin Christine und der aufregenden Madame Tabard; er ist im privaten Bereich genau so unentschlossen, wie er bei seinen beruflichen Versuchen unkonzentriert ist

Abbandonata dalla madre, Janine Castang cresce presso gli zii, piccoli commercianti che le fanno pesare la sua presenza in casa Janine ha sedici anni e due passioni: il cinema (soprattutto quello americano) e il furto (ruba di tutto, dalle sigarette alle stole di visone, alle elemosine in chiesa). Arrestata e rilasciata perché minorenne trova impiego come domestica presso un'agiata famiglia. Conosciuto Michel, un timido impiegato quarantenne, per lui, che non vuole la responsabilità di essere il suo primo amante, Janine si libera in fretta della verginità con un coetaneo. Delusa dall'uomo, troppo attaccato alla famiglia, si lega a Raoul, un giovane motociclista scapestrato, ladro anch'egli: con la sua complicità svaligia la casa dei padroni. Fuggono insieme verso il mare e un'illusoria libertà che finisce ben presto quando viene arrestata dalla polizia. In riformatorio fa amicizia con Mauricette che le insegna a fotografare e con la quale riesce a fuggire. Scopre di essere incinta e, non sapendo dove andare, torna al suo paese. Qui, per abortire clandestinamente, è costretta a impegnare la macchina fotografica regalatale da Mauricette. Tuttavia ci ripensa e, dopo essersi ripresa l'apparecchio, riprende il cammino
