At a time when allegory was scorned as "medieval," Spenser was dismissed as "Charming," and studies of Milton were largely relegated to the "sonorous organ music" of his proper names, C.S. Lewis began a rehabilitation of their critical reputations. His pronouncements on allegory, symbol and myth have generated a controversy which has refined and given new value to the whole genre of allegory. In The Allegory of Love Lewis set up the Art/Nature distinction between the Bower of Bliss and the Garden of Adonis which provoked serious reevaluation of Spenser's philosophic and moral purpose. Most critics (including Lewis himself in his later years) now find the primary correspondence between the Bower and the Temple of Venus as illustrating a concordant versus a discordant relationship of Art and Nature. However, Lewis undeniably provided the impetus which led to a gradual reawakening to this larger relationship, and also established the Sterility/Fertility contrast as the operative distinction between the Bower and Garden. On the larger question of Neoplatonic content in The Faerie Queene, Lewis changed his position from an original agreement with Stirling that any seemingly philosophic content was actuallly an Elizabethan commonplace, to agreement with Ellrodt that Platonism (carefully defined) informs the spirit of the poem. In his final years, Lewis found the study of Spenser's iconography immensely rewarding. Though he was primarily dependent upon written work rather than on the actual paintings, Lewis was among the first to apply the emblematic tradition to detailed study of a single image in The Faerie Queene. Lewis' most significant contribution to Spenser studies was to provoke other scholars into a close study of a poem which had been long patronized for its 'prettiness.' Lewis was among the first to restore to us the teacher whom Milton found to be as "sage and serious" as Aquinas. Lewis' major contribution to the study of Milton was to clear away misconceptions, and 'hinder hindrances' to the reading of Paradise Lost. In A Preface to Paradise Lost Lewis successfully defended the architectonic quality of Milton's verse against those such as Eliot and Leavis, who accused the poet of being "artificial and conventional." He also dealt with the three major theological controversies--Milton's theory of creation, brought into question by Saurat; Milton's Christology, which had been considered heretical since the publication of De Doctrina; and the Romantic identification of Satan as Milton's hero. Though he gave ambiguous approval to Saurat's explanation of 'creation by retraction' and granted Milton's Arianism in De Doctrina, Lewis was the first to assert that Milton's theology is basically orthodox. Writing at a time when the theology of the poem was considered so much rubbish to be cleared away, he replied, "Milton's thought, when purged of its theology, does not exist." Because he took Milton's Christian dogma seriously, he reminded his readers of the facts of the poem; Romantic critics who concentrated on Books I and II had forgotten the gradual degeneration of Satan, and had overlooked the fact that Milton believed Satan to be a liar, giving him plausible lies to speak within the poem. The recent wave of studies concentrating on Satan as liar and rhetorician indicate that the Satanist position is virtually moribund. Lewis' most surprising contribution to the understanding of Milton came in his interplanetary novels, and particularly in his own Edenic myth, Perelandra. His account of the temptation parallels and elucidates Milton's treatment, making the novel a door into the world of Paradise Lost

Chiefly, Dorothea Brande's legacy has been in creative writing through Becoming a Writer. In this bestseller, she establishes a program for putting the Cartesian divide to work. Brande's unwritten presence within rhetoric and composition can be traced through her definitions of genius and writing practices. Her writings reveal a short-lived career of a minor and mostly forgotten teacher-writer of the 1930's. In this forgetting, freewriting history misplaces a legacy that focuses on body-mind sustainability. In spite of this, her career and life provide a cautionary tale involving intolerance and fascism. Through her contradictions in freewriting and conservative purposes, Brande's errors are contrasted. Nevertheless, the case is made that Brande's flaws do not negate her contributions. The cautionary tale she provides parallels missteps process pedagogy makes daily. In its conclusion, the project discusses procedural rhetoric and expression alongside issues of sustainability, new media, and video game theory. Because writing as a tool is changing with many-to-many technologies, the calls for tech, new media, and teaching the network are important next steps. But the recommendation is that sustainability and reconciliation guide composition and rhetoric
