Economies under occupation : the hegemony of Nazi Germany and imperial Japan in World War II by Marcel Boldorf( Book )
10 editions published between 2015 and 2017 in English and held by 68 libraries worldwide
"Nazi Germany and Japan occupied huge areas at least for some period during World War II, and those territories became integral parts of their war economies. The book focuses on the policies of World War II aggressors in occupied countries. The unbalanced economic and financial relations were defined by administrative control, the implementation of institutions and a variety of military exploitation strategies. Plundering, looting and requisitions were frequent aggressive acts, but beyond these interventions by force, specific institutions were created to gain control over the occupied economies as a whole. An appropriate institutional setting was also crucial to give incentives to the companies in the occupied countries to produce munitions for the aggressors. The book explains the main fields of war exploitation (organisation and control, war financing and work force recruitment). It substantiates these aspects in case studies of occupied countries, and gives examples of the business policy of multinational companies under war conditions. The book also provides an account on differences and similarities of the two occupation systems"--
Measuring the extent and implications of director interlocking in the pre-war Japanese banking industry by Tetsuji Okazaki( Book )
6 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 34 libraries worldwide
As a result of the Asian financial crisis of 1997, the issue of corporate governance has attracted the attention of researchers as well as policy authorities. Much of the literature on the Asian crisis focuses specifically on the exploitation of minority shareholders by core members of family-based companies (Claessens et al. (1998); Lang (2001). We argue that family-based companies do not always exploit minority shareholders. Okazaki (1999) and Okazaki (2001) indicate that the companies affiliated to the major zaibatsu in pre-war Japan basically outperformed other companies in terms of ROE, using panel data of 1935 companies from 1922 to 1936. According to the book and paper, this was basically due to monitoring by the holding company through dispatching directors, checking financial records and so on. However, the existence of major zaibatsu such as Mitsui and Mitsubishi was only one aspect of the pre-war Japanese corporate system. In addition to the major zaibatsu, many small and mediumsized family-based corporate groups existed

Acquisitions, Productivity, and Profitability Evidence from the Japanese Cotton Spinning Industry by S. V Braginskiĭ( Book )
7 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and held by 9 libraries worldwide
We explore how changes in ownership and managerial control affect the productivity and profitability of producers. Using detailed operational, financial, and ownership data from the Japanese cotton spinning industry at the turn of the last century, we find a more nuanced picture than the straightforward "higher productivity buys lower productivity" story commonly appealed to in the literature. Acquired firms' production facilities were not on average less physically productive than the plants of the acquiring firms before acquisition, conditional on operating. They were much less profitable, however, due to consistently higher inventory levels and lower capacity utilization-differences which reflected problems in managing the uncertainties of demand. When purchased by more profitable firms, these less profitable acquired plants saw drops in inventories and gains in capacity utilization that raised both their productivity and profitability levels, consistent with acquiring owner/managers spreading their better demand management abilities across the acquired capital
