The fairy queen by Henry Purcell( file )
21 editions published between 1994 and 2011 in 4 languages and held by 685 libraries worldwide
"In 'The Fairy Queen,' two artistic geniuses met. The scenario is an adaptation of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream; the music is by Henry Purcell, the greatest English composer of his day. The result is one of the first great operas, a dazzling display of music and emotion that has lost none of its power since its premiere in 1692. Much of the music has come to have a life beyond the opera itself: songs such as "The Plaint," "Thrice Happy Lovers" and "Hark! The Echoing air" now regularly grace the concert hall stage, a delight for singers and audiences alike. This studio recording was made with Australia's pre-eminent independent opera company, Pinchgut Opera, in 2003, and is re-released here in deluxe packaging. The cast features the finest Australian singers (Sara Macliver, Sally-Anne Russell and Paul McMahon to name but three) under the direction of Baroque specialist Antony Walker. The period instruments of the Orchestra of the Antipodes provide accompaniment of vibrant colour and immediacy." -- Jbhifi.com.au
The Cambridge companion to Monteverdi ( Book )
14 editions published between 2007 and 2012 in English and held by 652 libraries worldwide
Claudio Monteverdi is one of the most important figures of 'early' music, a composer whose music speaks powerfully and directly to modern audiences. This book provides an up-to-date and authoritative treatment of Monteverdi and his music, complementing Paolo Fabbri's standard biography of the composer. Written by leading specialists in the field, it is aimed at students, performers and music-lovers in general and adds significantly to our understanding of Monteverdi's music, his life, and the contexts in which he worked. Chapters offering overviews of his output of sacred, secular and dramatic music are complemented by 'intermedi', in which contributors examine individual works, or sections of works in detail. The book draws extensively on Monteverdi's letters and includes a select discography/videography and a complete list of Monteverdi's works together with an index of first lines and titles

"Giulio Cesare Brancaccio was a Neapolitan nobleman with long practical experience of military life, first in the service of Charles V and later as both soldier and courtier in France and then at the court of Alfonso II d'Este at Ferrara. He was also a virtuoso bass singer whose performances were praised by both Tasso and Guarini - he was even for awhile the only male member of the famous Ferrarese court Concerto delle dame, who established a legendary reputation during the 1580s."

Monteverdi ( Book )
4 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 142 libraries worldwide
Claudio Monteverdi is now recognized as the towering figure of a critical transitional moment of Western music history: relentless innovator in every genre within chamber, church and theatre music; self-proclaimed leader of a 'new dispensation' between words and their musical expression; perhaps even 'Creator of Modern Music'. The 17 articles in this volume have been selected by Richard Wistreich to exemplify the best scholarship in English and because each, in retrospect, turns out to have been a ground-breaking contribution to one or more significant strands in Monteverdi studies. --from publisher description
