The consummate collector : William Beckford's letters to his bookseller by William Beckford( Book )
8 editions published between 2000 and 2013 in English and held by 119 libraries worldwide
"This collection of over 350 unpublished letters, written by William Beckford to his bookseller George Clarke over the years 1830 to 1834, gives a vivid picture of the exigent connoisseur in the act of gathering the books and manuscripts that ultimately became part of the library of the Duke of Hamilton, sold in 1882. They also shed light on the negotiations with the London publisher Richard Bentley for the publication of Italy, with Sketches of Spain and Portugal and trace the anxiety Beckford experienced in his fruitless efforts to sell the Episodes of Vathek. As the correspondence progresses, the letters become more colourful and wide-ranging, supplementing their great bibliophilic interest with glimpses of personalities and issues of the day. The editor's explanatory notes are pertinent and comprehensive, illuminating both Beckford's enthusiasms and his distinctive ebullience of expression."--Jacket

At the end of the novel, instead of attaining these powers, Vathek descends into a hell ruled by the demon Eblis where he is doomed to wander endlessly and speechlessly. --Wikipedia.com
