Madame de Murat fait partie de ces conteuses eclipsees par l'immense succes de leur contemporain, Charles Perrault. Or la pratique litteraire de ces femmes, a la fin du XVIIe siecle en France, constitue un veritable phenomene social, federant le public mondain des salons autour du conte de fees. Mais la comtesse de Murat avertit ses amies ecrivains : elles doivent etre des "fees mo dernes", ne s'occupant que de "grandes choses" et habitant des "palais enchantes". Elle-meme ecrit une quinzaine de contes, au moment ou la mode du genre bat son plein, dans les annees 1698 1699. N'hesitant pas a varier ses sources d'inspiration afin de renouveler le merveilleux, la conteuse puise dans les grandes epopees et les romans a succes de son epoque. Et s'il lui arrive d'e voquer des themes folkloriques, c'est pour mieux s'en éloigner. Les contes de Madame de Murat offrent en effet une certaine vision du "Grand Siecle", en lien avec l'actualite et la feerie de Versailles. Ils sont egalement l'occasion pour la comtesse, qui fut stigmatisee en raison des "desordres" de sa vie, de distiller ici ou la, en guise de morale, ses reflexions sur l'amour. C'es t a la lecture de ces histoires, qui constituent un veritable traite des passions, qu'invite le present ouvrage qui reunit pourla premiere fois l'ensemble des contes de Madame de Murat
