"For more than sixty years, the blue helmets of United Nations Peacekeeping missions around the world have come to symbolize both the promise and the fragility of the UN. Beset with unresolved conflicts and underfunding, and invariably burdened with sentiments of overexpectation, more times than not UN missions to keep the peace have made a difference. In recent years, frequent allegations of corruption, fraud, and abuse have tarnished the image of the UN as not only overly ineffectual, but as something to be skeptical of, rather than the obvious place to turn for help in resolving contentious challenges that affect many nations." "While the ups and downs of UN operations have been analyzed and critiqued, one policy sphere has largely been ignored: the track record of the UN following conflict in the area of housing, land, and property rights. This volume seeks to fill this void by examining the UN's experience in grappling with the immense and inevitable housing, land, and property rights crises that emerge in all countries during and after conflict."--Jacket

"Housing, land and property (HLP) rights, as rights, are widely recognized throughout international human rights and humanitarian law and provide a clear and consistent legal normative framework for developing better approaches to the HLP challenges faced by the UN and others seeking to build long-term peace. This book analyses the ubiquitous HLP challenges present in all conflict and post-conflict settings. It will bridge the worlds of the practitioner and the theorist by combining an overview of the international legal and policy frameworks on HLP rights with dozens of detailed case studies demonstrating country experiences from around the world. The book will be of particular interest to professors and students of international relations, law, human rights, and peace and conflict studies but will have a wider readership among practitioners working for international institutions such as the United Nations and the World Bank, non-governmental organizations, and national agencies in the developing world"--Provided by publisher

Climate change, sometimes thought of as a problem for the future, is already impacting people's lives around the world: families are losing their homes, lands and livelihoods as a result of sea level rise, increased frequency and intensity of storms, drought and other phenomena. Following several years of preparatory work across the globe, legal scholars, judges, UN officials and climate change experts from 11 countries came together to finalise a new normative framework aiming to strengthen the right of climate-displaced persons, households and communities. Handbook on housing and property restitution for refugees and displaced persons : implementing the "Pinheiro principles." by Scott Leckie( Book )
5 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 15 libraries worldwide
The critical importance of ensuring the realisation of refugees' and IDPs' right to housing and property restitution has become increasingly recognised. However, those responsible for ensuring the safe and dignified return and reintegration of displaced people have often lacked practical guidance to help them address the vastly complex and divisive issues involved. The 2005 Pinheiro Principles on Housing and Property Restitution for Refugees and Displaced Persons clarified the international standards governing the effective implementation of housing, land and property restitution programmes and mechanisms, and the Handbook on Housing and Property Restitution for Refugees and Displaced Persons builds on the Pinheiro Principles to give effective guidance to practitioners. It has been jointly prepared and published by UN-OCHA/IDD, UN HABITAT, UNHCR, FAO, OHCHR, and the Norwegian Refugee Council and its Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre, each contributing its experience in the complexities of property restitution. It aims to promote durable solutions for IDPs and refugees, and by helping to strengthen the protection of restitution rights, help to consolidate recent peace and prevent future conflict
