The Baltics : competitiveness on the eve of EU accession by Robert Burgess( Book )
7 editions published in 2004 in English and Undetermined and held by 130 libraries worldwide
Large current account deficits in Estonia and Latvia, and the continued real appreciation of the exchange rate in Lithuania, have prompted concerns about the competitiveness of the Baltic economies, and called into question the sustainability of their current fixed exchange rate arrangements. Recent external performance, however, appears to be explained more by temporary or cyclical developments than by a deterioration in the underlying competitive position of the Baltic economies. This book assesses the competitive position of the Baltic countries and focuses, in particular, on the viability of the countries' strategy of maintaining their fixed exchange rates upon joining the EU, participating in its exchange rate mechanism, and then adopting the euro at the earliest possible date.--Publisher's description

Inflation dynamics in Madagascar, 1971-2000 by Emilio Sacerdoti( Book )
2 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 15 libraries worldwide
The paper analyzes the dynamics of inflation in Madagascar in the period 1971-2000, applying cointegration analysis and error correction modeling. The empirical results, based on quarterly data, confirm that there exists a stable money demand relationship, as well as a purchasing power relationship in the long run. The former enters the short-run dynamics of inflation and money growth, while the latter affects the short-run dynamics of the exchange rate only. We also find that an appreciation has a direct negative impact on inflation and that inflation inertia is important. In addition, we conduct FIML estimation of the system and trace the impulse responses to various shocks

1. The spike in Slovenian inflation in 2007 and 2008 (an increase from 3.8 percent in 2007 to 5.5 percent in 2008, well above the euro-area average) has shown how structural bottlenecks may hamper Slovenian growth in the future. This paper investigates the role of supply factors (i.e., the increase in commodity prices and the catching-up effect) and demand-side effects (i.e., business cycle) in explaining this surge. Commodity related cost-push factors account for about 30 percent of the 2007-2008 surge in inflation while demand-pull factors explain approximately 37 percent; the remaining third is explained by other factors, including possibly labor cost pressure
Portugal: selected issues by Paulo Flavio Nacif Drummond( Book )
4 editions published between 2005 and 2006 in English and held by 2 libraries worldwide
A range of indicators point to a competitiveness gap of 10-20 percent with respect to euro area competitors. Closing the competitiveness gap will require an extended adjustment period, even with a jump in total factor productivity (TFP) growth and strong wage moderation. This paper reviews several factors that could help explain the boom and bust behavior of corporate investment. Investor sentiment will recover with the deepening of structural reforms, but high corporate debt level is likely to slow the pace of investment growth in the near future

Republic of Mozambique : selected issues ( file )
1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 0 libraries worldwide
This Selected Issues paper examines the macroeconomic and fiscal implications of natural gas project for Mozambique. Results, which are based on the IMF Fiscal Analysis of Resource Industries model, suggest that, by the mid-2020s, half of the country's output will be generated by natural gas. However, the fiscal revenues from the projects will remain moderate until the mid-2020s because of large depreciation costs for gas liquefaction facilities. Although the economic potential emerging from the projects is tremendous, macroeconomic and fiscal implications are quite sensitive to international commodity price developments and other risk factors, highlighting that the government's authorities would be well-advised in taking a cautious approach

Competitiveness in the Baltics in the run-up to EU accession by Robert Burgess( file )
1 edition published in 2003 in English and held by 0 libraries worldwide
This paper analyzes competitiveness in the Baltics in the run-up to European Union accession. Several factors appear to have driven movements in equilibrium real exchange rates in the Baltics since the start of the transition process. In the earlier years of transition, price liberalization, increased demand for services and other nontradables, and shifts in domestic production and exports toward higher valued-added products contributed to real appreciation through higher measured inflation. The strength of the real appreciation during these years appears to also reflect the correction of an initial undervaluation of exchange rates
