Ireland in the Middle Ages by Seán Duffy( Book )
10 editions published between 1996 and 1997 in English and held by 424 libraries worldwide
"Perhaps the single most formative development in Irish secular affairs was the English invasion which took place in the late 1160s, and which, in the space of a few short years, transformed the face of Ireland and permanently altered the course of Irish history. Unlike some earlier works, which either start or end with the invasion, this book places the arrival of the English as its centerpiece. It examines society and politics in pre-invasion Ireland, in particular the role and powers of kings and kingship, and the manner in which these were altered in the aftermath of the invasion. The arrival of the English and the reaction of the Irish are discussed in detail, as are the motives of those involved, and the consequences of their actions. Emphasis is placed on the affairs of the native Irish, in an effort to subvert the convention of viewing the history of later medieval Ireland through the eyes of the English colonial community alone. By the end of the Middle Ages the English attempt at conquering Ireland had remained unsuccessful: this book seeks to explain why." "Adopting a broad narrative sweep, spanning over five centuries, the book offers a reinterpretation of medieval Irish history, harvesting the fruits of recent research, and should be of interest both to experienced students of the subject and to those previously unacquainted with it."--Jacket
The illustrated history of Ireland by Seán Duffy( Book )
4 editions published between 2000 and 2002 in English and held by 183 libraries worldwide
"Few countries have as gripping and magnificent a history as Ireland. Fewer still inspire the sense of kinship and connections Irish Americans feel to the distant land and people of Ireland. The Illustrated History of Ireland offers an evocative blend of text, maps, photographs, and specially commissioned artwork in an appealing and accessible exploration of Ireland's colorful and rich heritage. From the arrival of the first Celtic peoples to today's climate of political turmoil, the richness and variety of Irish culture is presented in stunning detail in this unique guide for all Irish history enthusiasts."--BOOK JACKET
The world of the galloglass : kings, warlords and warriors in Ireland and Scotland, 1200-1600 ( Book )
4 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 128 libraries worldwide
"The intersection of Scottish and Irish politics and culture in the late Middle Ages is encapsulated in the figure of the galloglass. These West Highland and Hebridean warriors feature prominently in the military history of late medieval and early modern Ireland; yet, though often mentioned, their role has never been properly analyzed. In this collection of essays, Sean Duffy examines the 'prehistory' of the galloglass in Irish warfare, Kenneth Nicholls presents a full discussion of the various branches of galloglass kindred that rapidly proliferated throughout Ireland from the late thirteenth century onwards; and David Caldwell reconstructs from artefacts, images and documentary sources how a galloglass warrior may have appeared and operated - his dress, his weaponry, and his famous galleys." "But the volume also examines 'high politics': R.A. McDonald assesses the significance of Manx sea power in the north Irish Sea region; Alasdair Ross re-evaluates the evidence for an Irish link in the revolts against the Scots kings in northern Scotland in the late twelfth and the thirteenth centuries; Alex Woolf explores the mystery surrounding the identity of the king of Argyll who fell in the battle of Ballyshannon in 1247; Alison Cathcart looks at the Irish ambitions of King James V, and David Edwards unravels the part played by an obscure Fellow of Trinity College Dublin in James VI's succession to the throne vacated by the College's founder, Elizabeth I."--BOOK JACKET
