The story is structured as a male ensemble drama in three parts: the Australian desert of pure strength and survival, the Egyptian training base of mixed race, pranks and sport, and the chaotic deadly Gallipoli beachhead. The film celebrates rather than interrogates the ANZAC legend. Its lack of irony, projection of the past in an innocent, mythologized way, and its popular and critical success has made Gallipoli a key film in what has been proposed as 'the AFC genre'.

In the summer of 1900 three girls ascend a mysterious rock in the midst of the Australian bush and disappear. The Victorian girls' school for the daughters of the privileged gradually becomes contaminated and destroyed from within by its inability to understand the forces confronting it. Based on a novel which mythologises the emergence of sexuality, the film atmospherically follows various tangents without distilling a sense of explanation. Unease is evoked by the horror of not knowing.
