The Dominican friar Ascelin of Lombardia was sent by Pope Innocent IV as a papal envoy to the Mongol camp at Sisan. He left Lyon in March 1245 and met the Mongol ruler Baiju at his camp in the Arax river valley in 1247. His companion Simon of St Quentin wrote a History of the Mongols describing the Mongol conquest as well as his own observations

Andrew of Longjumeau led one of several missions (1245-1247) sent to the Mongol leaders by Pope Innocent IV. He set out from Lyon in the spring of 1245 and travelled through Syria and Persia delivering his papal correspondence near Tabriz. Andrew made a second mission to the Mongols (1249-1251) as an ambassador of the French King, Louis IX. This party set out from Cyprus in January 1249 reaching the port of Antioch in Syria and then proceeding through Persia to the Mongol court. On his return Andrew made his report to the French King at Caesarea in Palestine in 1251. See details in the writings of William of Rubruck
