Modular, portable, and reconfigurable wireless sensing system for the aircraft cabin ( Computer File )
3 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 165 libraries worldwide
This paper describes the design and prototyping of a modular, portable, reconfigurable, and wireless multipurpose sensor system for monitoring and recording environmental conditions in aircraft cabins. The objective of this small, portable embedded sensing system is to record aircraft cabin conditions on flights of convenience to generate a large database for determination of normal conditions. By designing a sensor system that can be easily reconfigured for different needs (with the ability and flexibility to accommodate different/extra sensors), the system can be used to measure parameters that meet multiple research requirements. Through design considerations such as generalized signal interface and hierarchical code structure that can be easily reworked for new sensors, this sensor system has been developed for optimum usefulness in aircraft environment research. In the current setup, the system is configured with temperature, humidity, sound level, carbon dioxide, and pressure sensors. The system has been calibrated in the laboratory without the use of a pressure chamber. Data from six flights are presented in this report

Roughness progression on KDOT asphalt pavements ( Book )
2 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 24 libraries worldwide
In this study, roughness of 17 pavement sections, built between 1998 and 2001 were analyzed. These sections were constructed over different subgrade and base types, and different asphalt binder aggregates were used. Annual roughness data was collected from the Pavement Management Information System database of the Kansas Department of Transportation. In addition, five new sections, built over the last three years, were also monitored. Roughness data on these sections were collected periodically. International Roughness Index (IRI) was used as the roughness statistic for analyzing both types of sections
Cost-Effective Reciprocating Engine Emissions Control and Monitoring for E & P Field and Gathering Engines ( Computer File )
18 editions published between 2003 and 2007 in English and held by 22 libraries worldwide
This quarterly report discusses the results from a testing phase of the project that evaluates emission control technologies applied to a two-stroke cycle natural gas-fueled engine. In this phase, a one cylinder Ajax DP-115 (a 13.25 in bore x 16 in stroke, 360 rpm engine) is used to assess a sequential analysis and evaluation of a series of engine upgrades. As with most of the engines used in the natural gas industry, the Ajax engine is a mature engine with widespread usage throughout gas gathering industry. The end point is an assessment of these technologies that assigns a cost per unit reduction in NO(subscript x) emissions. This report describes potential emission reduction technologies followed by a battery of tests that demonstrate synergies between some of the more promising technologies. While the end-goal is a closed loop control, low cost NO(subscript x) retrofit package, additional work remains. The battery of tests include pre-combustion chambers, in-cylinder sensors, the means to adjust the air-to-fuel ratio, and modification of the air filter housing. During several phases of the tests, the ignition timing also was varied to determine the optimal point for ignition timing. The results from these tests suggest that an optimum exists where fuel consumption is minimized along with NO(subscript x) emissions. By using the Ajax DP-115 these tests are completed in a low-cost and efficient manner. The various technologies can be quickly exchanged with different hardware, and the cost to operate the engine is very inexpensive

Handbook of traffic control practices for low volume rural roads ( Book )
2 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 20 libraries worldwide
The main purpose of this Low Volume Rural Road (LVR) Handbook is to assist the local government officials in providing traffic control and guidance for persons driving on LVR. The suggested practices in the LVR Handbook are in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 2003 Edition (MUTCD 2003)and, in some cases, address more specifically the application of MUTCD 2003 to LVR. This handbook also includes background information on the characteristics of LVR
Automated calculation of passing sight distance using Global Positioning System data by Samson R Namala( Book )
2 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 20 libraries worldwide
The objective of this study was to develop a suitable model for measuring passing sight distance on two-lane, two-way highways using Global Positioning System (GPS) data and identify no passing zones. The model was converted into a computer algorithm and coded in Matlab version 6.5 and requires database toolbox. The algorithm has been tested on 10 highway segments and the results obtained are in agreement with the existing conditions
A field verification instrument to assess the placement accuracy of dowel bars and tie bars in PCCP by James E DeVault( Book )
1 edition published in 2005 in English and held by 20 libraries worldwide
This report describes the design and construction of a prototype instrument for location of steel dowel bars and tie bars in highway concrete. The instrument consists of a non-metallic (wooden) wheeled platform which carries a commercially available metal detector known as a covermeter, specially modified for this project. The covermeter is designed to be held in the hand and swept over a concrete wall or road, displaying the distance to steel within the concrete. The modified covermeter, mounted on the platform together with a notebook computer, outputs a serial data stream which is converted by the included software into information about the location and orientation of an array of dowel bars
Construction and performance of ultra-thin whitetopping in Kansas by Nicoleta Ileana Dumitru( Book )
2 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 19 libraries worldwide
A suburban city street in Kansas was rehabilitated with a 50 mm (2 in.) Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) thin overlay, commonly known as ultra-thin whitetopping (UTW). The construction and performance of this UTW project have been described in this report. The project, constructed in the Spring of 1995, incorporated the following design features: 0.9 m x 0.9 m (3 ft x 3 ft) panels versus 1.2 m x 1.2 m (4 ft x 4 ft) panels, plain versus fiber reinforced concrete, and sealed versus unsealed joints. The project has performed fairly well to date although some test sections needed periodic maintenance and all of the test sections except two have been overlaid as of October 2001. Experience on this project shows that the UTW overlay can be easily built with conventional equipment and locally available materials. UTW also permits a skid-resistant finish to be applied. Excellent smoothness can also be obtained although the slab thickness is very small. Corner cracking appears to be the most dominant distress type, though it was observed that bond existed between the concrete and the asphalt layers even for the cracked panels. The bond appeared to degrade with time. Joint spacing has a significant effect on performance. The sections with smaller joint spacing appeared to perform better. The performance of the sections with fibers in concrete was inconclusive. Also, joint sealing did not appear to affect the performance
