Beauty or beast? the woman warrior in the German imagination from the Renaissance to the present by Helen Watanabe-O'Kelly( file )
1 edition published in 2010 in English and held by 9 libraries worldwide
A regiment of women warriors strides across the battlefield of German culture - on the stage, in the opera house, on the page, and in paintings and prints. These warriors are re-imaginings by men of figures such as the Amazons, the Valkyries, and the biblical killer Judith. They are transgressive and therefore frightening figures who leave their proper female sphere and have to be made safe by being killed, deflowered, or both. This has produced some compelling works of Westernculture - Cranach's and Klimt's paintings of Judith, Schiller's Joan of Arc, Hebbel's Judith, Wagner's Br--uuml--;nnhi

Legal personality in international law by Roland Portmann( file )
1 edition published in 2010 in English and held by 9 libraries worldwide
Several current international legal issues are related to the concept of legal personality, including the determination of international rights and duties of non-state actors and the legal capacities of transnational institutions. When addressing these issues, different understandings of legal personality are employed. These concepts consider different entities to be international persons, state different criteria for becoming one and attach different consequences to being one. Roland Portmann systematizes the different positions on international personality by spelling out the assumptions on which they rest and examining how they were substantiated in legal practice. He puts forward the argument that positions on international personality which strongly emphasize the role of states or effective actors rely on assumptions that have been discarded in present international law. The principal argument is that international law has to be conceived as an open system, wherein there is no presumption for or against certain entities enjoying international personality
SAS for data analysis intermediate statistical methods by Mervyn G Marasinghe( file )
1 edition published in 2008 in English and held by 8 libraries worldwide
"This book is an integrated treatment of applied statistical methods, presented at an intermediate level, and the SAS programming language. It serves as an advanced introduction to SAS as well as how to use SAS for the analysis of data arising from many different experimental and observational studies. While there are many introductory texts on SAS programming, statistical methods texts that solely make use of SAS as the software of choice for the analysis of data are rare. While this is understandable from a marketability point of view, clearly such texts will serve the need of many thousands of students and professionals who desire to learn how to use SAS beyond the basic introduction they usually receive from taking an introductory statistics course. More recently, several authors in statistical methodology have begun to incorporate SAS in their texts but these books are limited to more specialized subjects." "Many of the standard topics covered in statistical methods texts supplemented by advanced material more suited for a second course in applied statistics are included, so that specific aspects of SAS procedures can be illustrated. Brief but instructive reviews of the statistical methodologies used are provided, and then illustrated with analysis of data sets used in well-known statistical methods texts. Particular attention is devoted to discussions of models used in each analysis because the authors believe that it is important for users to have not only an understanding of how these models are represented in SAS but also because it helps in the interpretation of the SAS output produced."--Jacket
Towards healthy cities comparing conditions for change by Alexander H. J Otgaar( file )
1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 8 libraries worldwide
"This book explores the conditions needed to make public and private investments in healthy cities most effective. The authors argue that three conditions are essential for such investments: citizen empowerment, corporate responsibility and a coordinated improvement of urban health conditions. Using an integrated approach to health in line with the Healthy Cities philosophy of the World Health Organization, case studies in Helsinki, Liverpool, London, Udine and Vancouver are not only used to demonstrate the relevance of these conditions, but also to show how actors in these cities are trying to meet these conditions."-pub. desc

1 edition published in 2010 in English and held by 8 libraries worldwide
The conflict between immunities and the right of access to court under Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights remains one of the most interesting problems in the current Strasbourg jurisprudence. It is here that human rights law and public international law are directly conflicting with each other. a oeDomestic immunitiesa oe of Members of Parliament, judges, the police or the social services have likewise conflicted
Applied aspects of optical communication and LIDAR by Nathan Blaunstein( file )
1 edition published in 2010 in English and held by 8 libraries worldwide

It examines numerous situations in over-the-terrain atmospheric communication channels, including the effects of natural phenomena and the corresponding features (turbulences and hydrometeors) on optical ray propagation." "Complete with parameters for information data streams, the text also provides time-saving suggestions for determining which optical devices will work best for minimizing the deleterious effects of natural atmospheric phenomena. Whether you're a researcher, an engineer, or student - this book provides you with the practical understanding required to use LIDAR to investigate all forms of atmospheric phenomena and to learn how to accurately predict primary parameters of atmospheric optical channels."--Jacket
