LS to Lieutenant Crofton from Commodore Thomas Herbert, Commander-in-Chief, south east coast of America, dated 1849 Apr 25, enclosing a manuscript copy of a confidential letter from James Hudson, secretary of legation to Rio de Janeiro. The enclosure references a dispatch from Viscount Palmerston directing Hudson to reach an agreement with the Brazilian government permitting British ships that have captured Brazilian slave ships to obtain assistance and supplies in Brazilian ports. Hudson relates his failure to achieve an accord with the Brazilian government, who view the seizure of slave vessels as illegal, and warns British naval officers to consider Brazilian ports as hostile.
