The accession consists of a 16 mm., color, sound projection print and VHS video transfer of a U.S. Navy film entitled "The day the tide turned red," produced by Fordel Films, Inc. for the Oceanographer of the Navy in 1975. The film number is MN-11395. The film describes the history of red tides, dinoflagellates which cause them, the conditions that encourage plankton blooms, and the effects of red tides on fish, shellfish, and man. The marine ecology of coastal areas and red tides in the United States, especially Florida, Massachusetts and Southern California are discussed. The film employs footage of coastal areas and red tides, moving and still images of plankton, and interviews with scientists to describe research on red tides, plankton, and toxins. It explains why the Navy supports this research. The film includes brief interviews with scientists including Bernard C. Abbott, H. David Baldridge, Perry W. Gilbert, Osmund Holm-Hansen, Dean F. Martin, Mikihito Oguri, Dorothy F. Soule, Charles S. Yentsch and Clarise M. Yentsch. The film includes views of laboratories including the Allan Hancock Foundation, Gloucester Marine Station of the University of Massachusetts, the Marine Research Laboratory in St. Petersburg, Florida, Mote Marine Laboratory, and Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
