Analysis of Control System from a Viewpoint of Desired Pole Placement and Desired Degree of Robustness ( Book )
1 edition published in 1984 in English and held by 1 library worldwide
A design method for solving the problem of robustness to cross-coupling perturbations in multivariable control systems for the X22A V/STOL aircraft is presented in this thesis. The method uses numerical optimization procedures to manipulate the system feedback gains as direct design variables. The manipulation is accomplished in a manner that produces desired performance by pole placement and robustness by modification of the minimum singular values of the system return difference matrix. Channels affected by cross-coupling perturbation may be recognized by the character of their transfer function Bode plots. The mechanism used by the pole placement and robustness routine in obtaining a robust design is evident from the gain changes associated with the transfer function diagram and the zero shifts shown on pole-zero plots. The pole placement and robustness routine uses gain equalization and zero assignment to modify the characteristics of the system in the areas of low singular values, producing a robust design. Additional keywords: Systems engineering; SISO (single input output system); MIMO (multi-input multi-output system); open loop systems; perturbations. (Author)

Experimental Observation of Wave-Wave Coupling in a Beam Plasma System ( Book )
1 edition published in 1971 in English and held by 1 library worldwide
The interaction between unstable waves has been investigated in a beam-plasma system under conditions such that nonlinear wave-particle interactions are negligible. At small wave amplitudes the results can be interpreted in terms of a simple three-wave decay process; at large amplitudes the situation is dominated by multiple wave coupling that leads to generation of satellite waves. Development of diagnostics for high-energy petawatt pulses ( file )
1 edition published in 2006 in English and held by 0 libraries worldwide
Applications accessed by high energy petawatt (HEPW) lasers require complete, single-shot characterization of pulse spatial, temporal, and energy characteristics. We describe techniques that enable single-shot characterization of the temporal shape and pulse contrast of HEPW pulses with>10{sup 8} dynamic range over a ns-temporal window. Approaches to measure pulse durations that span two orders of magnitude will be discussed. Finally, we describe a novel implementation of spectrally dispersed two-beam interferometry for measurement of the phase difference between two HEPW pulses. This technique can be applied to dispersion and B-integral measurements in a HEPW system, as well as to achieve precise timing of nanosecond pulses. Lastly, spectrally dispersed interferometry represents an ideal technique to enable coherent addition of HEPW pulses for production of ultrahigh intensities
Mobile Data Collection Applications : a Proof of Concept ( file )
1 edition published in 2006 in English and held by 0 libraries worldwide
This project's goal is to provide a proof of concept for mobile data collection applications, and identify the best ways such applications could be implemented and used. Such an application should decrease the time and resources users now need to devote to redundant data processes, and provide an easy of locating and retrieving data at a later time. The two types of available mobile devices, Personal Digital Assistants and Tablet Personal Computers, each have their particular strengths that suggest themselves for certain types of applications. As such, parallel data collection applications have been developed, with a common web application for uploading information to the database. While these aspects have been developed and proven, it still remains to refine these applications, develop the tables to hold their data, and field-test with users for their feedback
Center for Advanced Signal and Imaging Sciences Workshop 2004 ( file )

Welcome to the Eleventh Annual C.A.S.I.S. Workshop, a yearly event at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, presented by the Center for Advanced Signal & Image Sciences, or CASIS, and sponsored by the LLNL Engineering Directorate. Every November for the last 10 years we have convened a diverse set of engineering and scientific talent to share their work in signal processing, imaging, communications, controls, along with associated fields of mathematics, statistics, and computing sciences. This year is no exception, with sessions in Adaptive Optics, Applied Imaging, Scientific Data Mining, Electromagnetic Image and Signal Processing, Applied Signal Processing, National Ignition Facility (NIF) Imaging, and Nondestructive Characterization
