Nach dem Bestseller von Lewis Wallace entstand mit diesem Stummfilm eine aufwändige Inszenierung (u.a. 42 Kameramänner!) mit grandiosen Kampf- und Massenszenen und einem wirklich tollkühnen Wagenrennen (ohne Armbanduhr, wie im Remake); Spannung pur in grandiosen Bildern. Außerdem beinhaltet die Originalfassung einige der ersten Farbsequenzen der Filmgeschichte.
