The murder of Jonathan Orton by Ronald D Graybill( Sound Recording )
2 editions published between 1977 and 2011 in English and held by 2 libraries worldwide
Jonathan Orton is described as the first "martyr" among Seventh-day Adventists. His mysterious death occurred on the evening of March 8, 1866, while he was working in the barn and suffered a major blow to the head. He died very early the next morning. That crime was never solved. He was planning on attending his son's wedding in Lancaster the next Sunday, but instead that Sunday was the day of his funeral. Orton's home in Rochester, N.Y., served as a church for early Seventh-day Adventists starting in 1852, when his family and the family of J.N. Loughborough first joined the church. Years later Loughborough in his account of the early history of Seventh-day Adventism described this murder as an "assassination," perhaps influenced by the fact that Lincoln was assassinated the year before Orton's death
