Jonathan, a medical man, gets a job at a hospital, while Anne, who aspires to a career as a writer, becomes a junior editor at a publishing house, where she meets dashing novelist Jack (Cameron Daddo). Neither Anne nor Gilbert are happy in New York, so they return to Avonlea and wed, but when World War I breaks out, Gilbert joins the Army and is assigned to a medical unit. Gilbert is soon declared missing in action, and Anne volunteers for the Red Cross in hopes of finding him. However, before she can discover what's become of her husband, she encounters Jack, who is now working as a reporter covering the war
