1 edition published in 2001 in English and held by 2 libraries worldwide
Set in central Australia at the turn of the century, Serenades is a wonderfully poetic and richly told tale of love, culture and race. Jila is the child result of an evening's liaison between Afghan camel trader and an Aboriginal woman. Raised by her mother in a remote Lutheran community, as a child Jila (Alice Hines) becomes best friends with Johan (Aden Young), son of the community pastor. From here Jila becomes caught in a three way clash of cultures as her Afghan father returns to claim her as his own, removing her from the tight knit community and Johan's friendship. In true Shakespearian fashion distance, family and culture are thrown asunder with sometimes tragic consequences. Serenades is a lyrical and passionate love story told with simplicity and texture set in the sprawling central Australian outback
