Franz Kafka, geboren 3.7.1883 in Prag, gestorben 3.6.1924 in Kierling bei Wien. Sohn eines wohlhabenden jüdischen Kaufmanns. 1901-1906 studierte er Germanistik und Jura in Prag; 1906 promovierte er zum Dr. jur. 1908-1917 Angestellter einer Versicherungsgesellschaft. 1917 erkrankte er an Tbc, was ihn 1922 zur Aufgabe des Berufes zwang. Seit 1923 lebte er mit Dora Dymant zusammen als freier Schriftsteller in Berlin und Wien, zuletzt im Sanatorium Kierlang bei Wien, wo er an Kehlkopftuberkulose starb. Sein literarischer Nachlass, den er testamentarisch zur Verbrennung bestimmt hatte, wurde posthum gegen seinen Willen von Max Brod veröffentlicht
