Papers (excluding his diary) of Samuel Sewall, merchant, colonial magistrate, legislator, and member of the Mass. Governor's Council. Includes notes on sermons (1672-1714, with gaps); notes on scripture texts discussed at meetings of the Old South (Third) Church (begun 1676); a bill of lading book, shipping records used by Samuel Sewall from 1686-98 and later by James Foster of Portsmouth, N.H. from 1782-90; an account book, 1688-1692; and a few misc. diary-like notes. The papers also contain the records of Suffolk County Probate Court proceedings from 1715-28 and a letterbook of outgoing correspondence, probably kept by Sewall from 1686-1729 and by his son, Samuel Sewall, Jr. from 1730-37. Other papers of Samuel Sewall, Jr. include his arithmetic and copy-book, 1698-1772, including records of town meetings in Brookline, Mass., 1704-08, and genealogical records; and his diary notes (1714).
