Liebe zwischen Modernität und Tradition: Meir und Rivka sind seit zehn Jahren glücklich verheiratet, was in der jüdisch-orthodoxen Gemeinde Mea Shearim eine Rarität ist: Hochzeiten werden zumeist von den Eltern arrangiert und haben nur selten mit Liebe zu tun. Einziges Manko des glücklichen Paares ist ihre Kinderlosigkeit, die den Argwohn des Rabbis auf sich zieht. Als Oberhaupt des Viertels ist sein Wort Gesetz. So muss Meir seine geliebte Rivka verlassen, um seine Nachkommenschaft mit einer anderen Frau zu sichern. Und auch Malka, Rivkas Schwester, bleibt auf Geheiß des Rabbis ihr Liebesglück verwehrt: Seit Jahren liebt sie den jungen Yaakov, der aus der orthodoxen Gemeinde ausgestoßen wurde, weil er sich nicht den Traditionen beugen wollte. Statt seiner soll Malka den Thora-Schüler Yossef heiraten.
