This document summarizes information on current practices and potential future developments in the area of energyconservation on ships. It presents information on fuel quality and equipment, propulsion power systems, thrust system, auxiliary systems, ship resistance, ship operation, the application of fuel efficiency measures to variousCanadian ships, future fuels and power sources, and future propulsion systemsand equipment. It discusses existing technology and future developments withspecial reference to the application of this technology to Canadian vessels
The design, construction and testing of an Arctic survival sled by R. A Dick( Book )
6 editions published in 1988 in English and English, Old [ca. 450-1100] and held by 9 libraries worldwide
This report documents the design, construction and testing of an Arctic survival sled to transport lifesaving and survival equipment from a ship, over water and ice, to a safe location to set up a survival camp. The sled was designed to accomodate the weight and volume of an Arctic survival pack, to be dropped from a ship, and to be towed through water and over a range of ice conditions
Technologie des navires de côte arctique : possibilités actuelles, 1986 by R.A Dick( Book )
6 editions published in 1987 in French and English and held by 7 libraries worldwide
Experimentation with various methods of de-icing and anti-icing for ships by Canada( Book )
4 editions published in 1989 in English and held by 7 libraries worldwide
The purpose of this study was to improve ship and personnel safety and the practical operability of vessels exposed to severe ice accretion by experimentation with some icing control systems
Resistance and propulsion factors derived using system identification by R. A Dick( Book )
2 editions published between 1994 and 1995 in English and held by 7 libraries worldwide
This report describes work completed in the development of a method, using a system identification (SI) technique, to determine resistance and propulsion factors for ships in open water and in ice. The model tests and full scale trials were conducted with the CCGS TERRY FOX, a twin screw icebreaker with a multi-chine hull form and CP propellers. The report reviews the hydrodynamic theory of ship surge motion in open water and in ice and provides background information on SI theory and the methodology used by the SI system. It then describes the testing of a 1:21.8 scale model of the MV KALVIK, sister ship of the CCGS TERRY FOX, including self propulsion tests and both open water and in-ice towed resistance tests; and the full scale trials conducted on board the CCGS TERRY FOX during March 1994, including acceleration tests in both open water and in ice. It then compares the SI results obtained from the TERRY FOX trials with those obtained from trials conducted in the Beaufort Sea in 1991 and draws conclusions and provides recommendations on the SI system
Arctic ship technology : the state of the art, 1986 : summary report by Melville Shipping Ltd( Book )
2 editions published in 1987 in English and held by 6 libraries worldwide
Report presents results of a 1986 review of arctic ship technology which documents the present state of the art to provide ship designers and operators with a reference manual offering an up-to-date view of how the technology has developed over the last several decades
On-ice survival tests in the Arctic, February 1991 by Robert A Dick( Book )
3 editions published in 1991 in English and held by 5 libraries worldwide
Effect of parallel midbody on the resistance of ships in level ice by D. N Baker( Book )
3 editions published in 1988 in English and held by 5 libraries worldwide
This report presents the results of an investigation of the influence of parallel midbody length on resistance in ice, and how this is affected by the friction coefficient and by two different bow forms of ships intended for use in ice-infested waters
Arctic survival equipment testing and analysis by Melville Shipping Ltd( Book )
2 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 5 libraries worldwide
M.V. Arctic propulsive performance : summary report by R. A Dick( Book )
4 editions published in 1984 in English and held by 5 libraries worldwide
This study is one of a series of 5 complementary studies to improve the knowledge concerning the performance of an icebreaking bulk carrier operating in the Arctic. The study determined the effect of ice ingestion on the performance and strength of the main machinery, gear train, shafting and propeller by the analysis of data recorded from 1979 to 1981 by a data acquisition system fitted to the ship. The M.V. Arctic is a 28,000 DWT bulk carrier built to comply with the Canadian Arctic Shipping Pollution Prevention Regulations (CASPPR) for Class 2 vessels. The data bank from which the analysis was carried out was recorded during commercial voyages to and from the Canadian Arctic and during dedicated trials of the vessel in the Arctic, Lake Melville in Labrador, and the Saguenay River in Quebec
Personal arctic survival kit (PASK) field trials by R. A Dick( Book )
3 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 4 libraries worldwide
Part of a series of projects addressing the problems of ship evacuation and marine crew survival in ice-covered waters. This report introduces the concept of a Personal Arctic Survival Kit that will provide an individual mariner with the basic necessities for short-term Arctic survival. The report defines the objectives and design criteria; field trials conducted on the Gatineau River, Quebec in February 1993; and analysis of the qualitative assessments made during field trials
